Slip, Slop, Slap - Sun Protection...

As we are all aware, sun protection is the most important factor in having healthy skin. This entry is all about protecting ourselves from the harmful UV rays.

Lets begin with some knowledge on Sun Protection Factor (SPF).

This is found in all sunblocks and some moisturisers/foundations. We should all be using at least SPF 15 in makeup/creams every single day. Have a look at your cosmetics next time you apply them to see if yours contains a good level of SPF.

SPF is measured by 1 GRAM of sunblock on 1 CM sq area of skin. The SPF number is how much longer it takes this area of skin to burn than an area of skin without any cream on. For example, SPF 30 will result in the protected skin burning 30 times slower than naked skin. Therefore SPF 50 will take 50 times longer to burn than unprotected skin.

1 gram of sunblock

As you can see from the photo, 1g of cream is a huge amount to put on to 1cm; and we certainly wouldnt layer our entire body with that volume of cream. We obviously rub the cream in until its clear. We probably use 1 gram of cream to cover a whole arm! However, to get the TRUE SPF, you would need to have the density shown in the picture, all over your body.

Once we have rubbed our cream in, of course the SPF isn't going to be 30 or 50 because theres not a bulk of lotion layered on the whole body.

Once we have rubbed our cream in,

an SPF of 30 becomes SPF 2.3! We've gone from taking 30 times longer to burn, to 2.3!

An SPF of 50 is.....SPF 2.7!

As you can see, the importance of consistantly using an SPF matters incredibly, as you just aren't as protected as you would think you are. The higher the SPF value, the more protection you will have against the harmful rays of the sun. The sun is the number one killer of our cell turnover.

We must have a better understanding and a greater knowledge of how the sun drastically affects our ageing process so therefore we have to make a conscious effort to protect our skin.

I want you to love your skin, because it requires commitment, not a miracle!
